The Basenji (Congo Terrier) is one of the most ancient breeds. This is one of the few breeds that arose without human intervention. Its main feature is that the dog rarely barks. Basenjis communicate with people through sniffing, sighing, and other quiet sounds. This is a born hunter, a faithful companion of its active owner. This unique dog has many advantages. However, this does not mean that it is superior to other pets. Basenjis are sophisticated, independent and have an active temperament. Not everyone can cope with breeding these animals.
Some breeders believe that Basenjis are ideally kept in apartments. It is suitable for an active person for whom silence and cleanliness in the house are important. These pets do not bark and do not smell like dogs. However, in addition to their gentle behavior and ease of care, the Basenji also has disadvantages. Basenjis are ancient hunters, intelligent, independent and self-sufficient. Cynics sometimes say that Basenjis introduce people to their pack rather than turn them into pets.

The breed is not suitable for inexperienced owners or owners who need an obedient pet dog. Basenjis were not artificially bred, so they retained their ancient instincts and behavioral characteristics. Those who are lured by the Basenji's non-barking, easy-to-groom coat may face other parenting and training challenges. What makes this dog unique is that the Basenji has a very high pitched bark. They can be easily taught to sing, growl and make sounds similar to laughter. Many owners consider this a great advantage and teach their pets to “talk.”
There are two varieties of this breed: plains and forest dogs. These two breeds differ from each other in growth and behavior. The common dog is taller, lighter in color and more suitable for home breeding. The forest dog breed is also known as the pygmy. Their size does not exceed 40 cm, they have dark wool. Their character is independent and self-sufficient.
Basenjis are sociable dogs that get along well with their relatives, but do not like other animals. They are sociable and very intelligent, they are loyal friends and companions for humans. Having found an owner, they are very lonely without him. It is not recommended to leave the Basenji alone, especially as a puppy. Prolonged isolation can lead to destructive behavior.

The Congo Terrier becomes attached to all family members. They love to be the center of attention and demand to be played with. However, they are not intrusive. To become the owner of this breed, you must pay enough attention to your pet and be able to play and walk with it. Otherwise, the dog will grow up stubborn, uncontrollable and aggressive.
