The English Pointer breed originated in England in 1650, but the origin of these dogs is still a mystery. Their family tree is believed to include greyhounds, foxhounds, bloodhounds and bull terriers.
Long before the invention of guns, English pointers worked in tandem with greyhounds, assisting hunters in tracking hares, which were then chased by hounds. When firearms appeared, this breed found its new purpose in hunting birds. The English pointers were great at detecting hidden birds, raising their tails and pointing their muzzles at the prey, and then taking it out after the hunters fired. It is for this ability that she received the nickname "Cadillac of bird dogs".
When the American Kennel Club was founded in the late 1800s, the English Pointer became one of the first breeds recognized by the organization. Due to its hunting roots, this dog is excellent at campaigning and sports competitions, especially in tracking and agility.
