The Hamilton Hound is Sweden's most popular hunting dog and a national symbol. They are used to hunt rabbits, foxes and sometimes wild boar. They work alone or in pairs. They skillfully find animals, lure them and drive them to the hunter.
The breed has an excellent sense of smell, hearing and vision, is hardy and can pursue prey for a long time. They have a highly developed pursuit instinct. She is currently kept as a companion and family dog.
Dogs of this breed have a balanced temperament. They are loyal, attached to their owners and never show aggression. At home they behave calmly, affectionately and obediently. They require constant attention from their owners. In the absence of communication, they can be sad and grouchy. They are patient with children, love to play with them and allow them to play all sorts of pranks.
Representatives of this breed are wary of strangers, but are not suitable for the role of a guard. They avoid close contact with strangers and do not show aggression. However, she will bark at dangerous sounds. They also protect their owners in critical situations and can make independent decisions. They are friendly towards the pets they live with. However, they can conflict with other people's dogs and often chase cats.
Representatives of this breed are unpretentious in their maintenance and will get along in any conditions. However, it is better for them to have a large house with a plot. These dogs need regular exercise. It is necessary to take them outside twice a day, walking for at least one to two hours. Walks should be energetic, with active games and mental exercises. Frequent trips to nature or dog parks are desirable.
The coat should be short, smooth and not require special care. During the shedding period, it should be brushed 2-3 times a week. During the rest of the year, it is enough to regularly clean the wool with rubber mittens. Swimming is also optional. If your dog gets dirty, wipe it with a damp towel. Eyes and ears should be kept clean and nails trimmed regularly.
The Hamilton Hound is a very picky eater and will eat anything and is prone to overeating and gaining weight. They often beg for food, so the owner's task is to control the amount they eat and give them fewer treats. Dog handlers recommend keeping dogs out of the kitchen when people are eating.
Hamilton Hounds are wonderful family pets, loyal companions and versatile hunters. They accompany their owners on trips and walks, and play with children. If owners pay enough attention to their pet, it will give them a lot of pleasure.
