The Istrian Wirehaired Hound is one of the most popular dog breeds, especially in Yugoslavia. This breed is bred mainly in the northern part of Yugoslavia. This is because they are more susceptible to cold weather conditions than their short-haired cousins. The breed is closely related to the Istra Smooth-haired Hound. With the exception of coat type, they are all identical.
The Istrian Wirehaired Hound, a relative of the Smooth-haired Hound, also differs in character: the first hounds are more stubborn and require longer training.
The breed is represented as a universal hunter. They work great on rabbits and foxes and work great on blood trails.
Dogs of this breed have a very strong body, a powerful spine and a very strong tail. They also have a thick, low or medium voice. They have thick eyebrows, which makes their facial expression more serious and thoughtful. They have a wide forehead, a fairly large nose with well-developed nostrils and dark eyes. The long head has a high plantation of hair, does not have crooked floppy ears and is of medium size.
At the present stage, such dogs are bred exclusively for hunting. They are definitely not suitable for the role of a family pet or a house dog.
As for the lifestyle of the Istrian Wirehaired Hound, it must be active. This dog needs a lot of space to move and constant physical activity. For this reason, city life is not suitable. As for caring for the coat, it should only be combed.
The breed was first introduced in Vienna in 1866, when in the mid-19th century the Istrian Smooth-haired Hound was crossed with the French Wire-haired Hound to produce a dog with an improved voice.
They are very stubborn and energetic dogs, but not aggressive towards people, which makes them excellent companions not only as hunting dogs, but also sometimes need to be taken with you on hunts. Smooth-haired dogs have a softer character. Both breeds have very well developed hunting instincts and must be taught from an early age that livestock and other animals are taboo.
